A frightening experience
7th June, Thursday
Dear Diary,
Yesterday I had one of the most frightening experiences of my life!
I was staying at my grandparents’ house with my mum, dad and little brother. My aunt and uncle and cousins were there too. I was woken up early by a big storm. I got up and looked out of the window of my bedroom.
I listened to the loud thunder and watched the amazing lightning. It wasn’t scary at that time – it was exciting!
But then I looked at my dad’s phone and saw on the news that a cyclone was coming. I asked my dad what to do. He told me not to worry, but to follow safety instructions because cyclones can be dangerous. We stayed in a safe room away from the windows and listened to the news. There was a flood in the harbour and a strong wind was blowing the trees!
The winds got stronger and stronger. In the evening, Grandpa told us not to panic but to go to the dining room. I asked him why he was sending us there and he said that it was the safest place in the house.

كنت أقيم في منزل جدي وجدتي مع أمي وأبي وأخي الصغير. كانت عمتي وعمي وأولاد عمي هناك أيضًا. أيقظتني عاصفة قوية في وقت مبكر. نهضت ونظرت من نافذة غرفتي.
استمعت إلى صوت الرعد العالي وشاهدت البرق المدهش. لم يكن مخيفًا في ذلك الوقت – بل كان مثيرًا!
لكن بعد ذلك نظرت إلى هاتف أبي ورأيت في الأخبار أن إعصارًا قادم. سألت أبي ماذا نفعل، فقال لي ألا أقلق، ولكن أن نتبع تعليمات السلامة لأن الأعاصير قد تكون خطيرة. بقينا في غرفة آمنة بعيدًا عن النوافذ واستمعنا إلى الأخبار. كان هناك فيضان في الميناء ورياح قوية تهز الأشجار!
أصبحت الرياح أقوى وأقوى. وفي المساء، قال لنا جدي ألا نفزع وأن نذهب إلى غرفة الطعام. سألته لماذا يرسلنا إلى هناك فقال إنّها المكان الأكثر أمانًا في المنزل.

عزيزي دفتر المذكرات،
Yesterday I had one of the most frightening experiences of my life!
بالأمس مررتُ بإحدى أكثر التجارب رعبًا في حياتي!
I was staying at my grandparents’ house with my mum, dad and little brother. My aunt and uncle and cousins were there too.
كنت أقيم في بيت جدي وجدتي مع أمي وأبي وأخي الصغير. وكان عمي وعمتي وأولاد عمي هناك أيضًا.
I was woken up early by a big storm. I got up and looked out of the window of my bedroom.
استيقظتُ مبكرًا بسبب عاصفة قوية. نهضت ونظرت من نافذة غرفتي.
I listened to the loud thunder and watched the amazing lightning. It wasn’t scary at that time – it was exciting!
استمعتُ إلى صوت الرعد القوي وشاهدتُ البرق المدهش. لم يكن مخيفًا في ذلك الوقت – بل كان مثيرًا!
But then I looked at my dad’s phone and saw on the news that a cyclone was coming.
لكن بعد ذلك نظرتُ إلى هاتف أبي ورأيت في الأخبار أن إعصارًا قادمًا.
I asked my dad what a cyclone was and I asked him if he knew what to do.
سألت أبي: ما هو الإعصار؟ وسألته إن كان يعرف ماذا نفعل.
He told me not to worry, but to follow safety instructions because cyclones can be dangerous.
قال لي ألا أقلق، ولكن يجب أن نتبع تعليمات السلامة لأن الأعاصير قد تكون خطيرة.
We stayed in a safe room away from the windows and listened to the news.
بقينا في غرفة آمنة بعيدًا عن النوافذ واستمعنا إلى الأخبار.
There was a flood in the harbour and a strong wind was blowing the trees!

My aunt and uncle and cousins were already in the room. When we were all inside, we put the furniture in front of the doors and then we sat down on the floor together in the corner.
كانت عمتي وعمي وأولاد عمي هناك بالفعل. وعندما دخلنا جميعًا، وضعنا الأثاث أمام الأبواب ثم جلسنا معًا على الأرض في الزاوية.
We waited and waited. The winds got louder, the rain was falling on the roof and then it suddenly went dark.
انتظرنا طويلًا. واشتد صوت الرياح، وكانت الأمطار تتساقط على السقف ثم حل الظلام فجأة.
My dad told me to hold his hand.
أبي قال لي أن أمسك بيده.
I asked him if he was scared and he told me not to be scared.
سألته إن كان خائفًا، فقال لي ألا أخاف.
We stayed there for a long time, listening to the wild weather.
بقينا هناك لفترة طويلة نستمع إلى الطقس العاصف.
Finally, morning arrived and the rain stopped.
أخيرًا جاء الصباح وتوقفت الأمطار.
I couldn’t believe that the cyclone was finally over and I felt so happy that we were safe.
لم أصدق أن الإعصار انتهى أخيرًا وشعرت بسعادة كبيرة لأننا كنا بخير.
I hope I never have a night like that again.
أتمنى ألا أعيش ليلة كهذه مرة أخرى.

Phrasal verbs with get
We can combine the verb get with prepositions to make phrasal verbs.
الأفعال المركبة مع “get”
يمكننا أن نجمع الفعل get مع حروف الجر لتكوين أفعال مركبة.
- get + up = get up → ينهض / يستيقظ
- Why did he get up? → لماذا استيقظ؟
- He got up because the storm woke him up. → استيقظ لأن العاصفة أيقظته.
الأفعال المركبة المطلوبة (Phrasal verbs):
- get onto → يصعد على
- get down → ينزل / يتمدد
- get out → يخرج
- get up → يستيقظ / ينهض
- get into → يدخل
- get under → يختبئ تحت
If there’s an earthquake, you should get under a table.
إذا كان هناك زلزال، يجب أن تختبئ تحت الطاولة.
Please get into the car. We have to leave now.
من فضلك ادخل السيارة. علينا أن نغادر الآن.

النشاط رقم 4 يطلب كتابة جمل باستخدام الأفعال المركبة (Phrasal verbs) من النشاط 3. وهي:
