3 Match the people in the story to the words they said.

Grammar (القواعد)
Reported speech: Wh- questions
“What is a cyclone?”
➡ I asked my dad what a cyclone was.
الكلام المنقول: أسئلة Wh-
“ما هو الإعصار؟”
➡ سألت والدي ما هو الإعصار.
Reported speech: yes/no questions
“Do you know what to do?”
➡ I asked him if he knew what to do.
الكلام المنقول: أسئلة نعم/لا
“هل تعرف ماذا تفعل؟”
➡ سألته إن كان يعرف ماذا يفعل.
Reported speech: commands
“Get out!” ➡ Grandpa told us to get out.
“Don’t panic!” ➡ He told me not to panic.
الكلام المنقول: الأوامر
“اخرج!” ➡ قال لنا الجد أن نخرج.
“لا تفزع!” ➡ قال لي ألا أفزع.
القواعد المظللة (مع الاختيارات الصحيحة):
- When we report questions, we change present tenses to past tenses and we sometimes change pronouns, for example you becomes he.
عندما ننقل الأسئلة، نغيّر الأزمنة من الحاضر إلى الماضي وأحيانًا نغيّر الضمائر، على سبيل المثال: يتحول you إلى he. - When we report Wh- questions, we use ask + question word.
عندما ننقل أسئلة Wh- نستخدم ask + كلمة السؤال. - When we report yes/no questions, we use ask + if.
عندما ننقل أسئلة نعم/لا نستخدم ask + if. - When we report commands, we use tell + pronoun + to + verb.
عندما ننقل الأوامر، نستخدم tell + الضمير + to + الفعل.

2 What four commands did the scientist give?
ما هي الأوامر الأربعة التي أعطاها العالِم؟
- Go to the basement of your house.
اذهب إلى قبو منزلك. - Hide under a heavy table or desk.
اختبئ تحت طاولة أو مكتب ثقيل. - Don’t go near windows or doors.
لا تقترب من النوافذ أو الأبواب. - Don’t panic.
لا تفزع.
6 Work in pairs.
اعملوا في مجموعة من شخصين.
- Ask and answer two questions about natural disasters.
اطرح وأجب عن سؤالين حول الكوارث الطبيعية. - Give two commands about what to do.
أعطِ أمرين عمّا يجب فعله. - While you talk, note down your partner’s questions and commands.
أثناء حديثك، دوّن أسئلة وأوامر زميلك. - Report the questions and commands back to your partner. Are you correct?

Laura: I was just listening to an interview with a scientist about natural disasters.
لورا: كنت أستمع إلى مقابلة مع عالِم عن الكوارث الطبيعية.
Laura: The presenter asked her why heatwaves and droughts were happening more often than they used to and he also asked if there was anything we could do about it.
لورا: المذيع سألها لماذا تحدث موجات الحر والجفاف أكثر من السابق، وسأل أيضًا إذا كان هناك شيء يمكننا فعله حيال ذلك.
Alice: Well, you don’t have to be a scientist to answer those questions.
أليس: حسنًا، لست بحاجة لأن تكون عالِمًا لتجيب عن هذه الأسئلة.
Alice: Heatwaves and droughts are happening more often because of climate change, so if we want to do something we have to stop polluting the environment.
أليس: موجات الحر والجفاف تحدث أكثر بسبب تغيّر المناخ، لذا إذا أردنا أن نفعل شيئًا علينا أن نتوقف عن تلويث البيئة.
Laura: Yes, that’s what the scientist said!
لورا: نعم، هذا ما قاله العالِم!
Alice: What else did he ask?
أليس: ماذا سأل أيضًا؟
Laura: He asked her what a tsunami was.
لورا: سألها ما هو التسونامي.
Alice: I know this, too – that’s a big wave, which is caused by an earthquake or volcano under the sea.
أليس: أعرف هذا أيضًا – إنه موجة كبيرة تُسببها زلازل أو براكين تحت البحر.
Laura: Yes, that’s right. You’re a bit of an expert on natural disasters, aren’t you?

Alice: I watch quite a lot of videos about extreme weather! I think it’s really interesting!

Laura: Can you answer the last question, too? He asked her if tornadoes were dangerous.
لورا: هل تستطيعين الإجابة على السؤال الأخير أيضًا؟ لقد سألها إن كانت الأعاصير خطيرة.
Alice: Really? Everyone knows the answer to that question! Of course they are!
أليس: حقًا؟ الجميع يعرف إجابة هذا السؤال! بالطبع إنها خطيرة!
Laura: Yes, the scientist thought that was a strange question, too.
لورا: نعم، العالِم اعتقد أيضًا أن هذا سؤال غريب.
Alice: I don’t know much about tornadoes though. What else did she say?
أليس: لكني لا أعرف الكثير عن الأعاصير. ماذا قالت أيضًا؟
Laura: She gave some advice about what to do during a tornado. She told listeners to go to the basement of their houses or to hide under a heavy table or desk. She told them not to go near windows or doors and she told them not to panic.
لورا: أعطت بعض النصائح عن ماذا نفعل أثناء الإعصار. قالت للمستمعين أن يذهبوا إلى أقبية بيوتهم أو يختبئوا تحت طاولة أو مكتب ثقيل. وأخبرتهم ألا يقتربوا من النوافذ أو الأبواب وألا يفزعوا.
Alice: Hmmm, that’s interesting. I’m going to go and watch some videos about tornadoes now!

Teacher: OK, class. Does anyone know what a cyclone is? Zainab?
المعلم: حسنًا، يا صف. هل يعرف أحد ما هو الإعصار؟ زينب؟
Zainab: Yes, it’s a really big storm with lots of rain and strong winds that blow around in a circle.
زينب: نعم، إنه عاصفة كبيرة جدًا مع الكثير من المطر والرياح القوية التي تهب في دائرة.
Teacher: OK. And how is that different from a tornado? Dana?
المعلم: حسنًا. وكيف يختلف ذلك عن الإعصار الحلزوني؟ دانا؟
Dana: A tornado is smaller, but the winds are much faster. And tornadoes don’t last as long as cyclones.
دانا: الإعصار الحلزوني أصغر، لكن الرياح فيه أسرع بكثير. والأعاصير لا تدوم طويلًا مثل الأعاصير المدارية.
Teacher: Good. And what about a sandstorm? What’s that? Nawal?
المعلم: جيد. وماذا عن العاصفة الرملية؟ ما هي؟ نوال؟
Nawal: A sandstorm is a very strong wind, and it carries sand.
نوال: العاصفة الرملية هي رياح قوية جدًا، وتحمل معها الرمال.
Teacher: Excellent! Now open your books …
المعلم: ممتاز! الآن افتحوا كتبكم …
Boy: Phew! It’s so hot today. When is this heatwave going to end?
الولد: أف! الجو حار جدًا اليوم. متى ستنتهي موجة الحر هذه؟
Man: The weather service says it could last another two or three days.
الرجل: خدمة الطقس تقول إنها قد تستمر يومين أو ثلاثة أخرى.
Boy: Oh, no! And when is it going to rain?
الولد: أوه، لا! ومتى ستمطر؟
Man: I don’t know. We’re going to have a bad drought this year. Everything is so dry and that’s dangerous.

Boy: Dangerous? Why’s that?
الولد: خطير؟ لماذا؟
Man: Because there could be a forest fire. Do you remember what happened in California?

Boy: I do! That was terrible! Let’s hope for rain!
